TravelDaily Lab

Background

With the growing popularity of the Internet, increasingly sophisticated means of payment and continuously improved online user experience, China's online travel business has tremendous growth potential. In the next two years, China's online travel market is projected to grow at 30% or more per year. The market size in 2013 is expected to reach 68 billion yuan.

China's online travel market has attracted the attention of investors at home and abroad. Investment reached unprecedented heights in the second half of 2010 as the World Expo and the Asian Games significantly boosted the travel industry. On the one hand, the traditional Internet giants such as Tencent, Taobao and Baidu were stepping into the online travel market. On the other hand, startups focusing on mobile applications, social-sharing, trip planning and user-generated content are emerging to challenge the established players, backed by significant venture capital investments. Startups with innovative solutions and products have brought great vitality to China's online travel industry.

But at the same time, competition in certain areas is already very fierce, especially in the air and hotel online booking business, targeted by thousands of national and local competitors. The model of online group tour booking pioneered by Tuniu has been followed by dozens of players who, like Tuniu, originated as online travel communities. Group buying for hotels and tours has been quickly imitated by many industry giants, such as Ctrip, eLong and Mangocity. Unsurprisingly, this homogeneous competition leads to vicious price wars and declining profit margins.

Looking to the future of China's online travel market, the only way for a company to differentiate itself from the competition is to foster a culture of constant innovation. Consumer demand for better solutions and investors' interest in this market at this moment make it a crucial time to match the best new ideas with the capital required to put them into action.
